Debra G. Shults

Debra G. Shults, holds a B.S. degree in Environmental Health from East Tennessee State University and has worked for the Tennessee Division of Radiological Health for more than twenty-eight years. Ms. Shults is the Director of the Division of Radiological Health (DRH). Prior to being named Director, she served as Deputy Director of the Division since July, 2000. The Division is responsible for ensuring the protection of the public, workers, and the environment from the hazards of all sources of ionizing radiation. The Division maintains approximately 550 radioactive material licenses, several of which are low-level waste processing and treatment facilities. The Division also registers radiation machines, inspects the facilities that possess these licenses and registrations, collects and evaluates environmental samples, and provides technical assistance for radiological planning, training, and response relative to nuclear power plants and Department of Energy facilities in the State.

Ms. Shults was appointed to the Southeast Compact Commission in March, 1989, and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Commission and is a member of the Policy and Planning Committee and the Administrative Committee. Ms. Shults is also a graduate of the 2002 class of the Tennessee Government Management Institute.
