NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) WEBINAR AND PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE DRAFT REGULATORY BASIS FOR THE DISPOSAL OF GREATER-THAN-CLASS C (GTCC) WASTE
The NRC is seeking public comment on a draft regulatory basis for
potential new regulations governing the near-surface disposal of certain
low-level radioactive waste. The Draft Regulatory Basis for the
Disposal of GTCC Waste is publicly available through the NRC’s ADAMS
online database under accession number ML19059A403 [1]. The NRC staff
evaluated the hazards associated with GTCC waste streams in terms of
whether certain GTCC waste could be safely disposed in a near-surface
disposal facility. The staff also evaluated whether regulatory changes
would need to be considered to permit such action, and whether the NRC
or certain states should regulate such disposal. The draft regulatory
basis presents the results of the NRC staff’s evaluations. The
information provided in the draft regulatory basis should be viewed as
preliminary since it has not been reviewed and approved by the
Commission.
A notice was issued in the Federal Register on July 22, 2019 (see 84 FR
35037 [2]) initiating a 60-day public comment period. Comments may be
submitted via the federal government’s rulemaking website,
www.regulations.gov [3], using Docket ID NRC-2017-0081.
THE NRC WILL HOLD A WEBINAR ON AUGUST 22, 2019, AND A PUBLIC MEETING IN
AUSTIN, TEXAS, ON AUGUST 27, 2019, TO DISCUSS THE DRAFT REGULATORY
